: I need some help on this one: So many people seem to feel like it's not a big deal to completely alter the storyline of LOTR (which I strongly disagree with, leave out some things, yes, completely altar everything, no.) but I am curious: Has anyone read the novel Star Wars? Was the movie something completely different? Or was the novel written after the movie? If so, can someone cite an example of a popular novel made into a movie which was starkly different? (Not "Based" on a book, but called by exactly the same name as this trilogy will be.)

Stephen King's The Shining is a good example of both. King always hated the Stanley Kubrick version of the film, which bears a superficial resemblance to the book (haunted hotel in Colorado terrorizes young boy). Many of the books details were changed for no apparent reason (the room number where Danny is attacked, for example). King eventually became big enough to take control of a movie project, and a miniseries remake of The Shining was recently released which followed the book almost verbatim.
