: Ah Gandalf, still fighting the good fight I see. : Just a clarification of what I said. I said that Sauron taught Celebrimbor and the elf smiths only those portions of Ring Lore that were necessary to set his(Sauron's) plan in motion. He did not impart all of his knowledge to Celebrimbor or the smiths. I didn't say that the function of the elven made rings was dependant on existence of Sauron, or his spirit. Tolkien is clear that the continued existence and functioning of the One Ring and the rings of power were not dependent on the existence of Sauron. : Yes, all the rings of power functioned prior to the making of the One Ring, but Tolkien does say that once the One Ring was made, all the rings of power made by Celebrimbor and the elven smiths were bound to it and that they would function only so long as the One Ring existed. Tolkien never explained how this was accomplished, but did he need to explain. : In a sense, the One Ring is like Star Trek's warp drive, in that both did the job they were supposed to do. Yet, the nuts and bolts of how they did their job is never clearly or adequatly explained. Ahh, I think that's the crux of it... Because Tolkien said so, it must be so. Dun make a face! I agree! Still, it's kinda a let down, just to take on faith that it "worked", just because! I dunno, when everything else has being weighed to an ounce, it's just a short cut not to think about why (logically) it should work. Ahhh, maybe it's time to pack up my bags, and go home? It's been fun while it lasted! I dunno, I still stick to my premis that logically, it shouldn't work! But hey, looks like I'm fighting a losing battle now. Gandalf
