I guess I do not yet understand the rules of conduct on this board. I cannot see where things became personal. I read Bacchus' statement on bias to mean that those who have read the SIL, Hobbit and LOTR (and are uninfluenced, ie. biased, by readings of Tolkien's letters, unfinished works and other writings) might have a different view on the matter than those who have read the entirity of writings by Tolkien. When did this get personal? I want to make sure that I understand the code of behavior if I am going to continue in my participation. Are we allowed to disagree With the Power that be? That being, namely, thee. : : And a final, final note (hahaha). I am neither influenced by : : others or by a "gamer" mentality, and I do see a tension : : between Elves and Dwarves. Just a comment, as I think it is : : not a constructive manner of argument to generalize in that : : manner. Thank you. : Unfortunately, I cannot see that you aren't being influenced by what others say. The only way to be sure of what someone perceives in a book is to ask them as soon as they've read it before someone else says something. I guess you will have to trust me on that one. I could just as easily say that you are influenced by talking to others on the web and that your opinions are not shaped by a reading of the novels themselves, but that would lead us nowhere.
