: : snip : : Ummm, three points here. : : First we did stop, that was the point of the previous posting (ooo, nice alliteration). But perhaps you didn't follow the thread, in which case, that's ok, but in the future a little more discretion might be warrented. : : Second, I would rather this board not be reduced to the simple quoting of verse and chapter (which it is in no danger of!!). The joy of Tolkien is not only that he wrote a great story, but that people like Don Q and I can get together and discuss our view of his work. : : Finally, what author truly knows every nuance or influence that shaped their book(s). Certainly none. And knowing this, we can choose to look at certain peices or the text as a whole and discuss its meaning and its elements either in context to the rest of the book, in context to historical events, in context of letters or other discussions by the author (which this particular thread grew from), or standing on their own, to disemenate what we think and feel about the text. : : Unfortunately, Tolkien is no long with us to ask these questions. But, when I sail off into the West, I will certainly try to find him, and ask him a great many things. Until that time, this board keeps me company and aides me as both a sounding boards for ideas and an answer to questions that arrise from my particular reading of the text. : : -RobRoy : I agree RobRoy, no offence Valgus, but I think both RobRoy and myself should make the decision of where we take the discussiom (and anyone else who wanted to join in) and when to come to an agreement and stop, which we did. : In addition, when an author publishes a work, he cannot expect to control how that work is interpreted, if you want a private fairy tale, you don't publish it, you imagine it. : Don Q very well stated guys. I see your point. Valgus
