: "Arwen" is Welsh (meaning either silver "arian" + white "gwen" or fair/fine). But some name lists, perhaps mistakenly, say it means "Muse." It may therefore be an alteration of the Druidic "Awen," a Welsh/Breton name meaning Muse/inspiration (A Celtic "Sophia"), though "Arwen" in Breton means whitish. Are these two names two forms of one or : is the similarity just superficial? And are both names originally a reference to the "White" moon/Moon Goddess? Any sources or knowledge to assist me will be gratefully appreciated. I am interested in using the : name "Arwen" as a main character in a story I'm presently creating. It is a beautiful name intended to convey Celtic heritage as well as namesake : the noble Evenstar, Aragorn's beloved. I guess Ar- means "near" as in the Breton Ar-mor meaning coastland or literally "near the sea". So Arwen could certainly mean "near-white or whitish". Ereint, I think is a Welsh word for silver though Irish certainly uses the element "ar-" for silver as in the god Nuada Argatlam, Nuada of the Silver Hand. The Celtic goddesses are a bit of a shadowy bunch, we don't know too much about their functions. Dana seems to have been a mother goddess. Epona was connected with horses. Morrigan was a goddess of battle and death. There is evidence of a trinity of goddesses in Gaul probably connected with fertility. I don't know of one particularly connected with the moon.
