: : OK, modern invisible elf countries protected by powerful Rings... hmm "rings" a bell! : : In book 6 of Baum's Oz series, "The Emerald City of Oz," Ozma decides that Oz is just too accessible to the outside world (they've just barely beaten back an invasion by the Nomes, and Dorothy has certainly pointed out that airplanes have been invneted), so she has Glinda cast a spell of invisibility over Oz, cutting it off from the rest of the world. : : Now, Glinda is the most adult-like figure in the Oz heirarchy, and is kind of a guardian figure, a "good witch" of ancient lineage. Drop the "n," add an "r" and assorted vowels, we get Galadriel...Nah : Bob is indeed your uncle : Don Q : I just found this sight today and I'm really impressed with the discussions going on-I was just wondering if anyone was interested in discussing Tolkien and any similarities he might have with Zappa (such as: in Ben Watson's interview with Zappa in '92 or '93 Zappa made the point of comparing the language he concocted for '81's Thingfish with Tolkien-specifically saying that "well, it's not as good as Tolkien, but..."; that really burned Watson, being the punk/marxist snob that he is =) I still dig him though--I thought it pretty cool Zappa should acknowledge Tolkien as an influence...anyway) Pretty broad, but I'd be interested in anyone's take or views on this comparison or any other anyone woyuld like to make (there are pleeenty others out there). Thanks, and once again, coolsight and even cooler discussions! (Hope this entry doesn't sound too amatuer)
