: However, I am curious as to what you are defining as "normal". Certainly people in the south consider their speech to be normal, as do those out west, in the east, and up north. As a matter of fact, I would contend that more people then not have a regional accent, and most of those aren't aware that they do. Most people think that they speak without an accent anyhow. So I even am concerned about what we are considering to be a "normal" American accent. : -RobRoy I would define normal as anyone who doesn't talk like a southerner, cowboy, or hick. I live in the North (PA) and I Might have what someone could call an accent but I don't think I have one. So I guess that by normal I mean someone from the North. Excluding major cities because in places like Brooklyn you have weird accents. Everyplace in the World has different accents but that region would have something in common with the others. For example, if you had a person from Northern US, a person from Western US, and an Englishman the 2 from US would sound a little different but when compared to the Englishman they would sound almost the same. So that's what I mean by "normal". Also in response to the other thread posted by someone about how the English wanted to have the characters speak English and the Americans wanted to have the characters speak American. I am not saying that at all. That was my opinion and some of the characters I think SHOULD speak with an English Accent(Hobbitts). I just don't think that all of the characters should. All in my humble opinion. -Thentaran
