: Exactly my point. I am an american, and I don't think anyone in ME speaks with an american or english or scottish or indian (actual not american ;-) accent. Therefore my point that accents are arbitrarily (sp) asigned by the reader. I admit that to hearing Tolkiens recorded words forces me to think of the characters in his voice, but before hearing his recorded words, the characters spoke...according to the pictures I painted in my mind for them. In point of fact, Aaragorn and strider had different voices in my mind...even the 5th time I read LoTR. Same individual, yet to me a different voice due to the situation. Think of it this way, your the a King addressing people, or you're "hiding" out waiting for the opportunity to help Frodo, do you hide your accent/place of origin, or do you glibly go around saying thee and thine? I don't think so.

The characters have to speak with some kind of a voice though, so I guess the question is what's the best option we have? Obviously we can't get Mortensen, Wood, et al to speak exactly as we imagine the characters speak in our heads, so wich accents are better? I would say English accents have to be the way to go. By the way, why do you assume the archaic pronouns indicate royalty?
