Men were still clearly superior to orcs in fighting skill. : I think Elrond, Cirdan, Galadriel, and Glorfindel were all capable of at least standing up to a Balrog in the third age. : Also a note on Gandalf. It says somewhere that he was a peer of Sauron. He would have been more than capable of toasting the measly Moria Balrog in his true form. But when he came to M.E. he had to forfeit most of his strength and use wisdom against his enemies. The Riders of Rohan versus Orcs is not a good comparison. The Riders were mounted and armed with bows and did not deliberately engage in ahan-to-hand combat.
