: The details you describe don't really detract from the accuracy of Tolkien's world, since they are open to interpretation. If Tolkien didn't say exactly how Gil-Galad died, then it doesn't matter how its shown. However, Custer actualy did die in a certain way, a way that can never be known and thus never shown completely accurately. Thus history is impossible to show accurately, while fiction can be. That was my point. I would actually turn that same statement back to you. Unless omnicience is part of a director/screen writer's abilities, then knowing exactly what the author was thinking (i.e. the image in his/her mind) when he/she wrote the text is likewise impossible. Your point seemed to be that portraying fiction is simple because of the established text, whereas history is more difficult because there is so much that is unknowable. But my point was that since every single nuance is not described (just as in history) then it can not be accurately shown. The details that I used as evidence were just to prove, on a small basis, the amount, or rather the lack of information that the reader is actually given by the author, and this is especially true of Tolkien, and even more so because of the incredible amount of detail that DID go into his work, which allows for so much detail to be left unanswered. -RR
