: It is easy for us to remember the victories over the Orcs, but there were also may battles where the Orcs held the field of slaughter. True but in most of those battles they vastly outnumbered their enemies. Another example would be the battle of Gladden Fields were I *think* 200 men under Isildur took on a force that vastly outnumbered them and Tolkien states that his men killed 5 orcs for every man they lost. Granted these were Numenoreans but at the same time they were taking on a vastly superior force at night. I think it is reasonable to assume that the aerage fighting man of Gondor or Rohan would have been roughly equal to 2 or 3 orcs in fighting strength.
