True there was no Turin or Hurin, but still. : Remember what the handful of dunadain did to sauron with the elves after the fall of Numenor. It was a big fleet to Valinor then. Still realistically the intervention by the god was probably needed because the Valar did't think they had the right to kill so many children of Eru. I think that the Valar could certainly have repelled the assault of the Numenoreans without the intervention of Iluvatar (Among other reasons: it is said that Sauron knew that the Numenoreans could not win, and even Feanor could not have overcome even one of the Valar "had Eru made him thrice as great as he was".). But I agree with your points as the reasons why the Valar did call upon Eru. They could not have destroyed the Numenoreans with just a snap of their fingers and the war would have wrought grievous harm to Valinor and its inhabitants. Manwë perhaps said something like: "Look, it's Your children who are now rising against us, we could wipe them out but I don't think its proper that we should have to fight such a terrible war with Your offspring, so will you please deal with this situation in the way that you see fit." -Foradan
