: : : : "Sauron was 'greater', effectively, in the Second Age than Morgoth at the end of the First.

: : His spiritual power was less. Fine. : : This doesn't tell us anything what would have happened in a confrontation between the two: I doubt morgoth would have been overhelmed by his sorcery. It tells us nothing about who was better in facing elves on one to one bases. It tells us nothing of their leadership and charisma, in fact, in that Morgoth seems : : to have been better because after all Sauron kept serving him through the first age. If Sauron was in every way greater, why didn't he overthrow Morgoth. Affection, loyalty, doubt it. : : It doesn't tell anything about the powers of their armies, I'd really like to see where has MM gotten the information that : : Sauron at the end of the third age was militarily more powerful. : : All it tells us that Sauron was by that better in raising mountain ranges for his protection.

: Why does it have to come down to a fight between the two? There is no real indication of a power struggle between them.

Because what this discussion has been about is: Are the FA heroes better arse kickers than the TA heroes. Since Fingolfin has batteled Melkor, Feänor was said to be not powerful enough to defeat Melkor, Elendil & co fought Sauron etc it is important which is Melkor's and Sauron's prowess as an butt kicker.
