: : The simple fact that the line of his father's elder brother had died, means that he was by rights of inheritence, the new king of Numenor, thus being in direct line from Elros.

: I think you're confused on Elendil's lineage. He was not anywhere closely related to the kings of Numenor. Elendil's family were descended from Valandil, first lord of Andunie. He was the son of Silmarien and Elatan of Andunie (presumably a Beorian like Erendis). Silmarien was an Elrosian but her descendants had no place in the line of succession to the throne of Numenor.

None the less, Elendil was a descendent of Tar-Minyatur and the blood of Earendil flowed in his veins, and with the favor shown to the Lords of Andunie by the Kings, I find it highly unlikely that the last union between them was that of Silmarien and Elatan. During the 2500+ years prior to the Downfall of Numenor there were probably many marriages between the Houses of Andunie and Elros. At the very least, we know that Elendil was related to Ar-Pharazon through Tar-Palantir. Entry XXIV to 'The Line of Elros' contains a reference to this:

'...[Tar-Palantir] also would spend much of his days in Andunie, since Lindorie his mother's mother was of the kin of the Lords, being sister indeed of Earendur, the fifteenth Lord and grandfather of Numendil, who was Lord of Andunie in the days of Tar-Palantir his cousin...'

However, I admit that even with such a relation, Elendil would have had no special claim to the throne - no more than any other noble of Numenor, of course.
