: They must have had farms along the lake. I don`t think they : lived in them though, and I can`t actually find any direct : references to them. They must have various outhouses and sheds : and stables and cattle byres, but if the farms had been : habitable, then more people would have been able to take refuge : in them when they lost their town. As it was, "shelters could : be contrived for a few. The master had one."...

The very section you cite from says (earlier) that the woods and farms and cattle had escaped the destruction of the dragon. The farms were clearly fields tilled by townsfolk, and not separate homesteads.

: ... A farmhouse would have been a good deal more comfortable : than anything they could have "contrived" that night, and I : feel sure the master would have moved into one had they : existed. As it is, we`re told that "their woods and fields and : pastures and cattle and most of their boats remained : undamaged." Smaug planned to "set all the shoreland woods : ablaze, and wither every field and pasture," but again, there`s : no indication of any farms on the shore...

You just cited proof of the farms. A farm doesn't have to have a house on it to be a farm.

: ... I think all the people of Esgaroth lived in the town, even : those that tended their fields. They could leave their cattle : and horses in perfect safety - after all, there was no-one to : steal them.

: Tolkien`s own drawings and watercolours are quite different : from anyone else`s I have seen, although there are several : others I have liked. There are as a rule simple, uncluttered, : and yet they have something of an enchantment about them, don`t : they?

Yes indeed. I like his drawings and paintings.
