: : : snip : : : :I enjoy intelligent discussion regarding Tolkien's works far more than worries about how the movie will turn out.

: : : I second that

: : : Maedhros

: : That was not even close to the point I was making. As I said, the debate about the deviations was "not worth rehashing"

: I did not mean to dilute your point, but rather to take it a step farther. Like you, I may find the movie to be so far afield from LoTR that the deviations may interfere with my ability to enjoy the film. However, this will not stop me from seeing the movie. As I said, if I like it, I will see the second and third movies, and if I don't, I will not.

: My point, and it may not correspond to yours, is that the first movie will not be released until late 2001 (if I recall) and before it has even been edited for release, there is endless discussion over every rumour and press release. The elvish army at Helm's Deep may end up on the editing room floor. No one can agree on whether elvish ears are pointed or not (I go back and forth myself). I would rather discuss Tolkien's work than the rumours of Mr. Jackson's interpretations of that work. Its gotten to the point where I don't even read postings about the movie. Of course others may disagree and I expect to be disagreed with.

The thing is, the movie is a work of interpretation. So, critiquing the movie is critiquing someone's interpretation of the books. I don't see why that sort of discussion can't be intelligent or interesting. Even the rumors that abound serve a function; they make us think about a certain aspect of the movie and thengood debates arise because of those thoughts. Would we ever have discussed the role of Arwen in such depth without the rumors flying around? I would say no. However, I have been fascinated by that debate. Just another view. -Olorin
