: You just cited proof of the farms. A farm doesn't have to have a house on it to be a farm. Yes, I`m sorry. I seem to have confused farms and farmhouses, and used the words interchangeably. As you say, they had farms but no homesteads on them. When I looked yesterday, I couldn`t actually find the word "farm" anywhere in the text; perhaps I missed it, but I think he just describes the fields and pastures and cattle they contain. It`s even possible that the fields were divided into strips cultivated by the townsfolk (with pastures in common perhaps), and not into separate farms - but that`s just speculation on my part without any real evidence, and I have to admit that scattered strips would probably still be called a farm. Is there any evidence that there were separate homesteads on the farms outside Bree? I at first assumed there weren`t, for reasons of personal safety, and I don`t see how they could have survived the ruffians` attacks. Of course, if there hadn`t been, there`s the question of how the cattle and horses could have been protected from theives, as the Bree country was much less isolated and safe than the neighbourhood of Esgaroth. I suppose they could have been kept in the town, and we`re actually told that all (?) the riding ponies in Bree were stabled in the Prancing Pony.
