: : : : Actually when you think that ONE Elf could openly fight Morgoth while ONE elf could just barely beat ONE balrog. It seems conceivable that MANY balrogs led by Gothmog could openly rebel against Morgoth if they Really wanted to. : : : : -Thentaran

: : : Would the other Balrogs prefer to serve Gothmog instead of Melkor? And in the fight against Fingolfin Morgoth used only his : : : Hammer, Grond, no "magic". It was a duel, not a open fight.

: : What if Gothmog proposed to make them rulers of some kind? Besides you just proved my point....If they still followed Morgoth and not Gothmog(who would have probably promised them something) then that means they are LOYAL to Morgoth. : : -Thentaran

: No I think they would prefer to serve Morgoth because taking over would mean a risk and because Melkor probably had a bettter chance of winning the war against the elves than Gothmog or Sauron. Dragons might have been loyal to thei "creator" that I : somehow can imagine. :

I believe that balrogs and other such servants would have been unable to turn against Morgoth even if it seems that they may have had the srength to defeat him in combat. They had been subjugated by Melkor at the time when he was the greatest of the Ainur, and he probably put some sort of bond on them / some kind of bond was formed that survived for ever after, even when Melkor was weakened. As Morgoth squandered his strenght to gain a grip of the physical world, perhaps some of this power was also used up to enslave his servants. -Foradan
