Refuse to serve me, and I will kill you, here and now". : The points being made about the aura of an Istari being able to "awe" lesser beings are perfectly valid ones, I admit. I just think the answer is simpler in this case. And too, there is a case to be made for Saruman's abilities as a wizard. His voice was a very powerful weapon, and even when all else failed him he was able to use his voice to persuade Treebeard to free him. At the height of his power, and with a ring (though we don't know what it's abilities were) he might have simply "talked" the orcs into it. -RR
