: I also thank you, Michael, for your description. It seems that Imladris is in itself a haven for discussion (and one of many favorites). : So it goes to follow that another question hit my mind -- one would think that Master Elrond would have many banners, books, lore, temples, etc. regarding Iluvatar and/or the Valar themselves, especially since he was Earendil's son? I wonder why Tolkien never mentioned anything to the sort (and if he did I cannot recall them). Also perhaps some signage of his brother, Elros Tar-Minyatur...

This touches on something I`ve often wondered about.

Do the even the high elves know very much about Iluvatar? I don`t get the impression they do - apart from what we know from the Ainulindale, unless I`ve missed something from the History of Middle Earth, which I probably have:) Of course, they`ve spoken with Ainur who knew him before the creation, but I think Tolkien describes him somewhere as "almost infinitely remote." It`s chiefly the Valar they call upon in hymns, and in times of trouble (especially Elbereth) and it seems the only person in direct contact with him ("in his inmost thought") is Manwe.

I was very struck by the Debate of Finrod and Andreth, and the implication that men in some ways were closer to Eru than the Valar were, and had once spoken to him even more directly than Manwe did on Taniquetil.

Gandalf is strangely reluctant to mention him, isn`t he? I understand that it`s Iluvatar who for some reason chose Bilbo, and Frodo, but Gandalf doesn`t quite tell us that. "I can put no plainer than to say you were meant to have the ring, and not by its maker," he says, and that`s all he`s willing to tell Frodo. Also, he doesn`t say anything about who sent him back after his death, although we know from the letters (or is it from The Istari) that it was not the Valar who sent him this time, but a higher power. I wonder why?
