: : : : snip

: : I think too much is being read into the incidents surrounding the destruction of the Ring. Frodo couldn't get the job done; he was utterly under the control of the Ring. Gollum, most likely, caught him so much by suprise that even if he did have the strength to ward him off, he could not. Gollum was then so relieved to have "his precious" back that,in his excitement, he tripped and fell into the Cracks.

: : I doubt Sauron had any power over the Ring after it had left his "body" (Frodo as well, for that matter). Didn't Gandalf say somewhere that the Ring would search out its master? I think he did and so the Ring falling of Isildur's finger would have been by the Ring's "will" not Sauron's.

: : Don't everyone attack me for saying the Ring has a "will" - I just couldn't think of a better way of saying it. ;^)

: : No attack from me. I too believe that the Ring had a will of its own, and that the will was due to Sauron's spirit, within the ring, seeking to be reunited with the spirit with Sauron.

: I also think the Ring's will may have played a part in Frodo's dogged determination to get the ring to Mordor. When Frodo wore the ring and was upon Amon Hem(?) he said that he felt the eye looking for him and urging him to come to Mordor. Immediately after this, Frodo decides to leave the fellowship and journey to Mordor alone. Was this decision solely Frodo's, or did the will of the ring influence Frodo's decision? ~Aelmer

I belief Frodo suceeded. Did he need help at the end? Yes but I think that was how Tolkien wanted it to be. Frodo could not make the journey alone and had to hae somenone else finish the job but give me a break, he travelled thousands of miles pursued closely by the enemy into the heart of Sauron's realm carrying one of the most powerful relics of the ancient world. The whole point is that despite all Frodo's superhobbit effort he failed to acconplish his mission by himself. This was (IMHO) intended by Tolkien all along. No one could have completed the mission by themselves despite all the emotions and effort they might have put into the try.

I realize I'm going to be flamed for this but what the hell.
