: I made this statement before in a string and didn't get much responce so I will say it in heading. The dwarves were mortal. Long lived but mortal none the less. The elves believed that the : dwarves were like animals in that when they died they were just dead and nothing of them lived on. The dwarves believed that they were drawn by Mandos to a special place of waiting. What is the truth?

If we believe the tale 'Of Aule and Yavanna' then I would say the dwarves are right. Eru gave 'souls' to the dwarves, in acceptance of Aule's creations. He even called them the children of his adoption. "Thy offer was accepted even as it was made. Dost thou not see that these things have now a life of their own, and speak with thier own voices?"

For Tolkien's world, I'd say this alone clinches it ;) I know this does'nt speak directly to the argument of going to Mandos, but both elves and humans have lives beyond middle earth, tho different fates. I think Dwarves may have an ultimate fate different from the other childen, too, but even for a dwarf, there is more than just the circles of this world. However, I have also heard rumor that dwarves may work at restoring Middle Earth after the last battle, but since Tolkien backed off from an Armaggedon, we may never know, but I doubt that backing off from a last battle would also mean dwarves would lose any kind of after-life destiny given to the other Children of Illuvatar. Even the ents (and entwives) had a destiny beyond the shores of Middle earth. :)
