: Basically, if it can't be proven, we can pretty much assume it didn't happen. I can think up a pig-headed, bat-winged god, but I can't prove he/she exists, so he/she doesn't. Well, I don't want to get into a debate over logical conjecture and supporting evidence. However, just because Saruman's ring isn't mentioned again doesn't mean it didn't have power. More likely, through all the evidnce that HAS been presented (e.g. Saruman's Ring lore, his power as a wizard, etc.) then the ring MAY have had power. It seems more likely that it DID something (even if it only tied Saruman's shoe laces in the morning). It is more likely that Saruman was "sheilded" by Gandalf since he threw nothing magical (sans palantir) at the group that confronted him after the storming of Isengard at the tower of Orthanc. Just as we know that a wizard's staff has some special qualities to it, though we don't know what, it is more likely that Saruman's ring had some special qaulity to it that later was made impotent, with the rest of his powers when he was defeated. -RR
