Yes, he wanted to look back at least three ages to the time when the trees were in flower and see the "unimaginable hand and mind of Feanor at work. He seems to doubt his strength to do that, but he did tend to underestimate his own capabilities, and if he reckoned he had a chance of seeing back at least seven thousand years and as many miles, Aragorn, who as the rightful owner had a far better chance of mastering the stone, could easily have looked back a few weeks, or months, or years, to somewhere only a few miles from Minas Tirith.
