: : Aragorn claimed the palantir, and revealed himself to Sauron as the heir of the line of kings. The fact that he was so far away, and that he had the advantage of owning the palantir would have given him a huge advantage. This wasn't exactly a good example to match Aragorn and Sauron's wills. Even Gandalf had trouble merely distracting Sauron when Frodo was upon Amon Hen. My point was really that Aragorn didn't so much defeat Sauron, as cheat. =) : : This example isn't an indication that Aragorn can "defeat the greatest of Maia in a combat of wills", but that he was the rightful owner of the Palantir.

: : Gandalf

: Aragorn's will, though it was strong, could never match the will of Sauron. I agree that he 'cheated', but we have to, at least give him credit that he faced Sauron in will. I would give most of the credit though to Gandalf.

: Maedhros

I agree what do you mean by giving credit to Gandalf?
