Well, this was a fun discussion. I knew that I was building my case on awfully thin evidence, but the idea just jumped out at me as I read the passage where Eomer and Aragorn meet. If Eothain did play a further role, it is much more likely that in an interview he may have spilled what he knew, Eothain being unsophisticated and Grima clever. But what would he have reported? Strange claims from the man, or that the dwarf got all riled up and threatened Eomer with his axe over some elf-dame? That's the sort of thing that would stick in someone's mind and make for good campfire gossip. Grima wouldn't ned to interview anyone to hear this one, and to dismiss it as irrelevant, save as another example of Eomer's lack of judgement, in letting Gimli continue to live.
