: snip : : : Maybe there is an answer. Actually two. : : : At first, they could trade with the Woodmen that live between Mirkwood and the Anduin. : : : Secondly, for a tasteless regular meal they could eat mushrooms. : : : Mushrooms grow in the dark.

: : : Turgon : : But did the elves have to eat? Yes. Gandalf had to eat as well. A corporal body must follow the laws of physics. Gandalf was known for his huge appetite and he was a miar. The elves could certainly stave off starvation longer than a man but they needed food and water equally as much as any man. I can give you many examples of elves feasting and eating. They ate with Frodo and Sam in the woods of the Shire. There were several feasts mentioned at Rivendale. The wood elves had several feasts in the hobbit. They could get tired and they could get drunk and they could mate with a man. The elves bodies were not that different.

: The elves and maiar would live, unless killed, forever, why would they have been burdened with a need for food? By the end of this time, would the elves of Aman have been self sufficient? I wouldn't say they were, that is, if they had to eat regularly. Tolkiens physics were not earthen physics, if they were, Olwe would have been entirely deteriated by the third age. Whether the elves ate or not is never outrightly stated. They were only mentioned eating with other races, or feasting. How would you like some elves at your place watching you as you eat, because they didn't need food? They would have eaten out of courtesy.

: Here comes another tide of blind speculation...

: Maedhros

No I must disagree Tolkiens world does obey the laws of phisics arrows fly, water boils, and elves get hungry. They are immortal in that they don't age. But we know they can die, and they can not fly. A fall from a cliff would kill one. They can bleed to death. They can feel pain and suffer from torture. They can starve to death. They must eat to live
