: [snip] : Er, no, they obviously COULD practice wide-scale agriculture, unless you feel they were running around without any clothes on. Doriath and northern Mirkwood supported large populations. Just because the Elves were living in the woods, however, doesn't mean they couldn't raise crops. Farming in thick woodlands has been practiced for millennia. Woah, I think he is on your side Michael. Don't alienate your allies. Do you two always argue? hahaha As for the debate in general, Jim Gregors points out some very obvious evidence on eating. It is also apparent that the Elves ate well, feasting on several occasions. Logic states that they must have produced a large amount of food. Given that they probably didn't "replicate" it, they had to have farmed quite extensively. The bigger question that I have is, "What is it that makes some of us want to see them as not eating, or as semi-mystical nature freaks?" Is this something that some readers are getting from Tolkien's Elves or is it baggage that some people bring to the novels from outside sources? I don't think Tolkien presented his Elves as tree-huggers, or woodland sprites. They do seem to function closely with nature, but not that closely.
