: : : : : I wonder if Orcrist is not the sword of the Lord of the Fountains (whose name, as usual, escapes me) who slew a Balrog and was slain by one during the Downfall of Gondolin.

: : : : nt

: : : Orcrist could be possessed by any famous noble who lived in Gondolin. : : : Glamdring was Turgon's sword... my sword....

: : Or it could have simply sat in a vault or armory someplace within the City of Gondolin. Possessing a powerful weapon and using it are two different things. Anglachel sat in Thingol's armory for perhaps hundreds of years before Beleg choose it for his quest to find Turin. This may be because the Sindar preferred fighting with axes, or perhaps Thingol simply forgot he had it.

: How did those trolls steal these swords in the first place. Was there a battle in which the owners were killed, and the trolls were scavengers afterwards? (This is the only hypothisis I have been able to form so far)

Turgon and Ecthelion were slain in the fall of Gondolin near the end of the First Age. We kicked around some ideas on how the swords ended up in the trolls' posession and how the MM goblins recognized them a few weeks ago. My best guess is that they were looted at the fall of Gondolin and eventually passed through to the trolls. AFAIK, it is never explicitly stated who owned Orcrist or what happened to the swords throughout the SA and TA.
