: : : If the truth was demanded of whether or not elves ate, I would say that they did, but I would rather debate about something obsolete than agree about everything.

: : Agreed. Many of the discussions on this board are focused on the obscure and (sometimes) the ridiculous. That does not take meaning away from the participants, just as those who haven't read Tolkien might scoff as this entire board. At the end of the day, when all the chickens are counted, none of it really matters. Yet, that is not the point for the existence of this board nor for our pressense and participation on the board.

: Yet there is a point at which debates become ridiculous. The idea that Elves do not eat is too far fetched to even deserve comment. I could as easily state that all elves had two heads because Tolkien never stated that they didn't; or that they had 17 arms; or flew around in spaceships; or could travel from one end of the cosmos to the other with but a thought...

: At what point does a valid debate degenerate senseless drivel??

It all depends on what other board activity is present. If no debate is going, any disagreement will thrive; when, on the other hand, board activity is high and many exciting debates are going, pointless ones will not begin.
