Here's a question: Did Sauron in fact connect the funny fellow at Erebor to the Ring?

Let's look at what the MIA would have found out. They would have been investigating how exactly the kingdom had been reestablished. At the time that they were probably investigating this (presumably relatively soon after the fact) there probably would have been little reason to remark upon Bilbo except as a curiosity. Very few people realized his contributions. At most, people might remember the funny little guy with a cold who was with the dwarves. It was not until much later that Sauron discovered that the Ring was held by Baggins from Shire. I just don't see him making the connection. Gollum would not have been able to give him a date for his loss, and as you say, Gollum knew nothing about the Dwarves.

Looking at UT, the narrative seems to indicate that Gollum was released either in late 3017 or early 3018. Aragorn captured him on Feb 1, and Sauron learned of this in March. He then sent the Nazgul, etc, etc. The big problem with this seems to be Gandalf getting from Mirkwood to Hobbiton in about 2 weeks. I don't have the Tale of Years in front of me, but I assume that you are correct in your earlier post concerning dates. I'm not sure how to reconcile this. One thought is that the Shire and Gondor had different calendars. Perhaps we lost something in the translation.
