In The Hobbit too IIRC the goblins pursue the Thorin and Co. in the dark (or was this a sense of smell thing, I forget). Orcs could probably see better at night than Men, though some light would doubtless be an improvement over none at all. I think similarly that the Eldar could see well enough in the dark, but with some other light sources they could see even better. Usually, and this is only from a human perspective, once the eyes have become accustomed to the light (i.e. the pupil has widened to allow as much light as possible to enter) any brighter light such as that provided by a torch or a campfire, becomes a distraction and ruins the night vision (since the pupil shrinks to reduce the amount of light that enters). Granted with enough torches or fires it becomes a moot point, since night vision is no longer required. Though none of this may apply to orcs. -RR
