: : 1- Where is the blasphemy in the priests statement. Especially since Tolkien said that LOTR was largely a christian work. The priest is simply drawing a comparison between a fictional story and what the priest believed as his faith. It's not like he claimed that Galadriel WAS the Virgin Mary.

: Sorry friend, I make it a point not to get involved in theological debates - ever.

Ummmm . . . that wasn't a theological question, unless they have changed the meaning of the word. I was simply asking for more information. As I understand the meaning of the word "blasphemy" (from Webster's II) it is either a contemptuous or profane act, utterance or writing concernins God (though not one specific God) . . . or it is the claiming for one's self the attributes and rights of God. I am not asking a theological question, I am asking an informational one: Where is the blasphemy in the priest's statement?

: : 2- Doesn't the fact that we are having this debate disprove that a topic which was previously thought rather "ridiculous" isn't afterall?

: Its still ridiculous, the topic simply changed...

The topic hasn't changed, it is exactly the same based on a statement that Jim Gregors made. The topic is Tolkien and the theme under which were discussing the topic is ridiculous debate, of which Jim has stated several examples which were meant to prove that some debates are ridiculous . . . but since we are still discussing it (and Jim has remained with us) I would say that this debate, spawned from Jim's ridiculous topic, has some merit . . . at least to those of us involved in it.

Which, amazingly enough, leads me back to one of my previous statements in that a debate becomes ridiculous when the participating parties define it as such. If all parties agree that the debate has merit, then discussion continues, regardless if third party states that it does not (thus the many debates over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin).
