: Read the essay I posted. It addresses all these questions and more. I see that I'd been misreading the Balrog's intentions. He doesn't need to prevent himself from falling, his goal is to destroy the only member of the Fellowship who is a threat: Gandalf. He is unaware of the Ring, and unconcerned with Sauron's goals. I'd been assuming that he was some how in command of the orcs, and one of the orcs, in the Chamber of Mazarbul fight is aware enough of his master's purpose as to dodge Aragorn and Boromir's swords (to him the greatest threat) so as to "carry out his mission" and attack Frodo: undoubtably he was one of the Mordor uruks. The orcs, of course, feared and thus followed the Balrog, but they didn't welcome his aid: by themselves the orcs had been enough to finish off Balin's group, and here were only nine, even if the old one with the staff was proving to be more dangerous than he looked. Maybe the Balrog was responding to malice beamed from afar from Barad-dur and thus awake and alert. But I don't think so. I haven't seen this point debated much, but do you suppose the Balrog was slumbering peacefully, until Pippin dropped that silly stone?
