We are really arguing semantics here, and (IMHO) I don't buy into a Balrog with poor posture (perhaps the dwarves took all the chairs with lower lumbar support as they fled Khazad Dum?? ;)). When the fire dims on the Balrog, I would think that this was a sort of concentration, as he summoned the energy needed to either change his shape/size or at least appear to change that shape or size. The crux of this lies in the fact that he didn't just draw himself up to his full height, but rather to "a great height", indicating something more out of the ordinary (especially when we have wizards who seemingly can do the same thing). -RR
