: : Those attributes do not show goodness or evil. The mafia : : shows the traits of courage, loyalty and friendship. Does : : that change the basic evil nature of their enterprise, their : : actions and them individually? No. Hitler won the Iron Cross : : first class in the First World War. He loved his dogs. He : : was still irredeemably evil.

: Courage, loyalty, and honor are all considered to be virtues, and are used by people to determine "good" and "bad". That those whom we consider to be bad guys hold them in high esteem doesn't change the fact we all use them in similar fashions.

: The Iraqis and Iranians see America as an evil nation. We see their countries as evil nations. It has been said that evil is in the eye of the beholder, and the good guys are always the victors because only the victors write the histories.

: Where the Orcs are concerned they are not the good guys. They are the villains, but they are (among all the villains) the only villains with an excuse, and that nullifies any analysis of Tolkien which propounds the theme of "Good and Evil races".

: That's my point. Pratchett was wrong, and even though his nonsense had yet to be written by many decades, he was one of those critics whom Tolkien said was wrong for decrying the "good and bad" races in THE LORD OF THE RINGS.

I agree with you on Pratchett but, if I may be so bond, I think you are swinging too far in the opposite direction - equalizing the races too much.

Yes, "...the Elves are not *wholly* good or in the right"; but they are mostly there.

The above quote must be read together with the passage that stated that the Free Peoples' cause was indefeasibly right and evil actions on their part would not change that.
