I think for Gollum, at leat initially, that was a vision. Gollum was not especially sociable, and did not seek to dominate, but rather to be left alone. He was inquisitive, malicious and secretive. He wanted to spy and to observe. Only he didn't often get away with that. Society placed a considerable pressure on him to adapt, and his secrecy was a defence mechanism against society (getting very Freudian here). The ring gave him the opportunity to be himself. For a simple mind as Smeagol's must have been, that is vision and temptation enough.
