: I have read, and own every one of Pratchett's books, and i : love his humour.

: Having said all that, it's obvious what the point of this : posting is.

: You shouldn't really judge his works on one artical he has : written that "flames" Tolkien.

: Perhaps he is a great writer, and you will never find out, : simply because as a reader, he does not like Tolkien?

: Come on guys, get over it. not everyone likes Tolkien : (unfortunately). However, it makes little sense to boycott : someone simply because he or she expresses those views.

You are correct. Pratchett IS a great writer. He is also a great hypocrite. For now, I am still too ticked off at him to want to keep any of my Pratchett books, let alone buy more. He is an author who has demanded "respect" for his writing, yet who did not extend a similar respect to Tolkien's.

If people want to boycott Pratchett because of his hypocrisy or just his bad attitude, they are fortunate that they still have other good authors to choose from.

If all current fantasy authors treated Tolkien with the same disrespect, I'd probably never read another fantasy book again (except Tolkien's). But, happily, others DO treat him with greater respect (even if they DO think he was a medievalist).

I'm not about to mount an anti-Pratchett campaign and ask people to stop reading his books. I doubt the issue would move enough people to actually hurt him financially. But I won't forget that he is a hypocrite. Not after the way his fans came after me for using the word "zany" to describe his books in a Discworld FAQ I posted to the news groups for two years.
