I suggested that some of the things attributed to Tom could only be done by the author. The author is all-powerful and can do whatever he/she likes in a story. Who would be unaffected by the ring? The Author. Who could see Frodo when he wore the Ring? The Author. Who could make the Ring disappear? The Author. Who could hear cries for help miles away and show up in a matter of moments? The Author. snip This is actually a very good theory, and makes a lot of sense in the schema of Bombadil and his store of powers. I'm not certain that it is the case, but it is a very nicely thought out effort. And well worth discussion. -RR
