: Really, all of Aelmer's questions become the crux of a different question: Is the One Ring sentient?

: I'm not certain if that is what Aelmer is driving at, but it seems that if the Ring is able to make itself physically heavier (which it seemed to) and uses the knowledge of those around it to tempt them, then a certain degree of sentience is indicated.

Yes. The One Ring's level of sentience, or lack there of, is at the heart of my questions.

In discussions, the Ring is often given the ability to directly influence the actions of people around it, not just its bearer. The Ring made Boromir behave the way he did, being one example often cited. I was interested in the amount of sentience, and therefor influence, people would give the Ring in the situations described in my questions. ~Aelmer
