I'm getting slightly lost in my own argument here. I think that Sauron's native power was not diminished by the investment in the Ring, just displaced, but that Sauron's ability to actively use the power he had placed in the Ring was to some extent restricted by his loss of physical contact.

However, I think the Ring also gave an amplification of his power and a focus for it, even when it was not in his possession, though on a limited scale.

So there is a profit and loss side to all the dimensions resulting from the making of the Ring and its loss.

I imagine that when the Ring is not in Sauron's possession Sauron loses some, but not all, ability to use the native power he had placed in the Ring. He also loses some, but not all, of the power magnifying and focussing attributes that the Ring imparts.

Obviously he is less than he would be with the Ring on his finger, but we do not know if Sauron with his rapport with the Ring is a greater or lesser power than he was before ever the Ring was made.
