: : : : Blatantly, provably, demonstratably wrong on that this is not the decision Tolkien made. You've still not shown me that this is the decision best for the story: That it was the right decision. :-)

: : : Anyway I may take a look at these "Barrowdowns" - I hadn't even heard of them before a few days ago... Still my purpose wasn't so much to define a canon for Tolkien, but more to "rewrite" him. After all I also said it would be better if both Finduilas and Orodreth were children of Angrod and I *do* know that there's absolutely no text that has Finduilas as Orodreth's sister...

: : : Aris Katsaris

: : If your view were correct, then there are millions of ways (as many as there are fans) in which Tolkien was "wrong".

: : Rightness or wrongness becomes meaningless in such a debate.

: Opinions are hardly meaningless. But that there are millions of opinions doesn't mean that all opinions are equally valid. That's what arguments and discussion are for.

I am taking my leave of this discussion as we will have to agree to disagree HOWEVER 1) Yes I meant Fingon earlier, was a typo/mistake (how appropriate) 2) You are entitled to your opinion, but that does not make Tolkein 'wrong' - this is my only point - you are not in a position to ascribe rightness or wrongness, only to express opinion. George Lucas was not 'wrong' to include Ewoks, they were crap and irritating, but integral to what he wrote and by definiton 'right' - crapness does not = wrongness on any logical level. Subjectivity has no truth value Thanks for the discussion, very stimulating. Don Quixote
