Cotton was a burden in at least two ways. 1) It rapidly depleted the soil of necessary nutrients requiring rotation of crops and therefore vast land areas. 2) The raising, care, harvesting, and transportation of the crop was labor intensive and therefore required many people and animals for the process.
Slavery was a burden as it had logistical problems with taking care of the people who were slaves (food, clothing, shelter, medicine, etc) and the oversight and training and need to prevent escape. The fear of uprisings and revolt required much energy and management.
The economics of cotton farming, ginning, transportation, and maintaining a work force were quite considerably complicated in that the bulk of demand was from England with political overtones and market manipulations.
