Desmond Pushing the Button on "Lost"

haha - I'm not going to spoil the ending of either. But basically the Outer Limits ep related to a potential alien invasion, except the button pushers
(several in separate bunkers around the world) began to suspect it was all an experiment, to see if they would follow orders. But then there appears to be
proof that the invasion did indeed happen while they were closed off underground. There was a resolution... then a twist, with the episode having the guy
return to pushing the button, heading into an unknown future.
It wasn't entirely resolved on Lost either. There were a LOT of implications that it was an experiment to watch how people reacted in isolation...but ultimately
there was a big explosion that negated the need to push the button. But something happened that may or may not have sent one character's consciousness
jumping around in time, and/or alternate realities. And something may or may not have been destroyed or altered in that explosion. And if one character
hadn't used a fail-safe key - whatever the heck that was - there possibly could have been a HUGE electromagnetic surge/pulse thing that could have severely
damaged the planet. But it was never answered why no one let that happen to begin with, so as to make the button-pushing unnecessary. Possibly over the years
scientists thought they could somehow harness all that energy, and so initiated the button-pushing in order to keep active whatever source of power there was.
At the time it all seemed completely believable... and now it's impossible to explain or describe coherently. But I've probably described it more clearly above than the show ever did. :poke:
