  Not sure it was ever common, although I do recall hearing about something like this when I was a kid. Maybe whatever I heard was inspired by the real-world disease. The name of the disease, kuru, does not sound familiar to me. Probably whatever I heard about was an urban legend inspired by the real thing.

  Ick. Alvin, you have finally grossed me out. But now you explain it, I do recall reading about this disease before. Hopefully I can forget about it again, as I don't eat brains.
