The technology could not be used "from start to finish" for nurturing fetuses from conception to full birth. It's only intended and being designed to save the lives of babies born at around 24 weeks. They usually cannot survive even in incubators because their lungs are not fully formed.
The reason for developing this technology is heart-breaking, as anyone who has lost as child knows.
They're hoping the technology will be ready for use in about 10 years. And one of the great things about the project is they're trying to use mannequins to develop and test systems without animal-based experiments. I'm not fond of using animals for experiments; I think it's a cruel and inhumane practice, even though I undoubtedly have benefited from medical science that relied on animal testing.
