  Hi! I've been trying to remember the name and author of a book I read years ago but I can't. I was wondering whether anyone else had read it and if they knew its title. It's a fantasy book and I think it went something like this:
  
  There was an elf whose world was parallel to humans. He came across and was captured by the father of the main character. He had him chained in iron manacles and this burned him. The daughter of his captor for some reason cried for him and her tears healed his wounds. She came back with a bowl of tears to heal the rest of his burns.
  I think she then released him and he went back over to his world. (I think I remember the woman smelt roses whenever someone crossed over the border between the two worlds.)
  Eventually she wanted to see him again and so she figured out how to cross over and did so. His world was colourless and very cold and she began to freeze to death. He found her and sent her back I think.
  Next bit I remember is that the main character's mother was ill or insane. She was in an asylum or something similar and the woman visited her every so often. I think the elf then came back and they tried to be together but the father was trying to kill him. The woman's mother died and then the elf and the woman melded into one as an energy because they were dying (the father tried to kill the elf and suceeded in hitting both of them) then they drank from some sort of chalice and it transported them to another existence I think.
  
  Now I know that was all over the place and a little crazy sounding but if it sounded anything like a book you know of, could you please tell me? I'm going mad trying to remember it!!!

  I don't have any ideas either. I plugged "book elf parallel world" into a search engine and got several results, but rather than my trying to guess if one of the results is the one you are looking for, it would be better if you would look.

  Thanks for the welcome guys and thanks for your advice Arcadia, i've tried using relevant keywords to find it but you can imagine how many books fit into the categories of elves and parallel worlds!
  Still, I won't give up. If only I could remember where I got the book from the first time, it would make things a lot easier! Oh, well i'll keep looking and i'll let u guys know if by some miracle I find it again.
