  Disney pulling back on making Marvel, Star Wars content, Iger says

  Earlier this year Disney said it would slash $5.5 billion in costs, including $3 billion in non-sports content costs.
  
  Iger said the explosion in Marvel TV shows in recent years "diluted focus and attention" for the brand.

  
  Hard to say if this owes anything to Disney's budget mis-steps under the previous CEO, or if it's connected to Disney's flight from Florida due it attacks from Ron DeSantis, or if it's due to the Hollywood writers' strike, or if it's due to the economy.
  
  Probably a mix of all of them.

  Yep, and other factors, too, I think. There was always going to be a 'market correction' with all these streaming services. And the studios stepped in it by cutting their losses and wiping several recently released streaming shows from existence for tax breaks--which I think was one of the final straws that pushed the writers and actors to strike, as everyone involved in those projects saw all potential for royalties from them vanish overnight.

  I've read a load of articles lately proclaiming that the Disney+ streaming shows killed the Star Wars and MCU films' box office performances. I think that theory is a load of bantha pudu. These are good shows and they're worth watching.
  
  I know a lot of people complained about The Book of Boba Fett, but it made the character more interesting than a single movie would have. And I like how it departed from formula and left Boba hanging while we followed Din Djarin (the Mandalorian) for a bit. It was a good way to bring him into perspective for viewers who may have missed watching The Mandalorian (and I was one of those people for a long time).
  
  I could complain all day long about how Disney has botched the SW film franchise. I think they've done a much better job with the streaming TV spinoffs. And now Bob Iger is probably going to bury the whole franchise by insisting on a film-centric focus. I don't think he realizes that the pandemic has seriously damaged the cinema industry and it may never recover (just as the drive-in cinema industry appears to have never recovered from its downfall).

  With the occasional exception, there is no ‘box office’ anymore, so I agree that argument doesn’t carry any weight. As always, I’d say over saturation of live-action products is the problem, rather than the specific delivery system for them.

  Well, I guess the short answer to that is Bob Iger came back to run the company and because it's losing money he's trying to cut costs. But these kinds of changes in direction are also driven by the personal preferences of the corporate leaders. They'll push projects they want to see happen and kill projects they don't believe in. They don't pay much attention to what fandoms want (or, sometimes it's all about what the fandoms want - but not in this case, I think).

  While they're probably still the biggest money makers, it's not like it used to be. The shows and movies continue to be extremely expensive to produce, the multiple revenue streams they used to have are gone. They aren't getting the kind of money on the front-end that they used to from the cinematic releases. Nobody buys DVDs anymore. They probably get virtually nothing for licensing their shows and movies for traditional tv airing.
  
  Streaming, which was supposed to be the future, is not going so well. If I understand correctly, Prime Video will soon be adding commercials. Presumably they'll be like Hulu and charge you more if you don't want to watch commercials. Paramount Plus has obviously not been doing well, as I have seen several of the new Star Trek shows with previews available on the free streaming services-obviously trying to get new viewers hooked.

  I just got an email informing me that my Disney+ bundle subscription will soon be going up to $18.99 per month. We've been cutting back on streaming expenses lately and I guess we'll have to figure out what we want to live without in the Disney+ plan in the next couple of weeks.
  
  I realize inflation is affecting everyone, and I suspect the new agreement with the Writers Guild of America may be cited as a reason for the price increase. But we're just not getting the value from these services we once did.

  I agree. On the occasions that I have resubscribed to watch an exclusive I've never seen enough that made me want to maintain a monthly subscription indefinitely. Maybe if I didn't pay to watch motorcycle racing, I'd be more willing to maintain a subscription on one of the big streaming services, but you've got to choose where to spend your money!
