  I prefer seeing Dorothy as a black girl than the wicked witch of the west?

  The show doesn't really feature Dorothy, although depending on the version, she can appear. I believe she's supposed to for this version, but we'll have to wait and see.
  
  That said, I don't really have an opinion on the race of characters for fantasy stories. If this was historical, that would be something else.

  It sounds like they're going to heroify the villain of the story. I guess the novel and the play did that?

  I think bad guys should just stay bad guys in fiction. Everyone thinks they're the good guy in real life, I suppose, but fiction isn't supposed to be just like real life.

  I misspoke.  I was conflating "protagonist" with "heroify" and not reading it as "hero" or "heroic", which is not the case. The new portrayal - which I think came out 20 years ago - gives depth to the original character, and provides a backstory for how she came to be the "Wicked Witch of the West".  It doesn't so much make a hero out of her, but it does provide for a nuanced and maybe sympathetic interpretation of the character.
  
  She is still, ultimately, responsible for her actions, but this telling gives her actions reasons beyond a shrug and, "Well, she's evil."

  They also made her sympathetic in Oz the Great and Powerful. I guess the trend has been there for a long time and it just doesn't appeal to me.
  
  I never read Grunts, Mary Gentle's satire about a group of Orcs who revolt against the stereotypes of modern heroic fantasy. That may have laid the groundwork for some of these reverse-angle replays (or contributed to the momentum). I can't think of an earlier example although I suppose she wasn't the first author to do that.
