And I do agree with your sentiment about objects of worship. IMO, we are overdoing it with obediently treating too many artifacts as such, when in reality they may have had a very mundane meaning back in the day. Too many buildings are being perceived as temples, once discovered, and so on.
Personally, I am fascinated by megalithic and carved structures, such as the cave temples of India, Giza temples, or trilithons of Baalbek. All of them still need a good explanation, since a purely religious purpose does not bode well with the insane logistics of their construction.
Çatalhöyük is another poorly understood location, where walls have no doors or windows. Was there a threat to the settlers that we are not even aware of, which required such an unorthodox means of fortification? I have the same question about Derinkuyu, another mysterious city.
